Site closed after worker falls to his death

WORK has been ordered to stop on a building site in Minhang District where one worker died and another was injured on Saturday, officials said yesterday.

"Work can resume on the construction site only if the company is cleared of responsibility," said an official, surnamed Weng, with the Minhang Administration of Work Safety.

Local work safety inspectors said the investigation reports will be released in a week.

Two workers, both in their 20s, fell from a mobile elevating platform when it broke at 8:30am while they were painting beneath the Jiamin Elevated Road about 20 meters above the ground, authorities said.

Song Xiangru, 20, was pronounced dead in hospital. Wang Ding, 23, suffered chest and head injuries and was undergoing treatment.

Witnesses said one of the platform's supports beneath it collapsed resulting in the platform tilting down and the workers tumbling off.

The elevated road, which is still under construction, will connect Jiading District to the Hongqiao Transport Hub.

The crossing of Beidi Road and Huaxiang Road, where the accident occurred, was shut to traffic for about four hours over safety concerns, traffic police said.

The workers were hired by Shanghai Hongpu Steel Structure Co Ltd. Company officials yesterday declined to comment.

The company failed to pass a safety standard test in 2007, but did not appear on the failed list last year, according a local work safety inspector.

The company, founded in 1994, helped to build the elevated road under contract, said the authorities.
