Smurfs step out for Belgium
SMURFS, the blue elf-like creatures, are ready to serve the Belgium Pavilion as its mascot during the coming Shanghai World Expo.
The Belgian animation image, created by Peyo in 1958, hit China in the 1980s with the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series and won countless domestic fans.
Construction started today on the cube-shaped pavilion with a planned 5,000 square meters of space and a "brain cell" at the center of the cube.
Conferences and forums will be held in the building during the six month Expo.
The European Union's exhibition hall will also be located in the building, accounting for one fifth of the total space.
