Sock thief shoots at patrol

ONE of three men caught stealing socks from a factory in Nanhui shot and wounded a member of a civil defense patrol.

Prosecutors have now arrested the three and charged the shooter, a man surnamed Liu, with robbery and theft, and his two accomplices, surnamed Zhou and Shen, with theft, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.

The three broke into the Mingshi Knitting Company at Huinan Town, Nanhui District at midnight on January 14 after poisoning the guard dogs there.

Two civilian defense members surnamed Qu and Xu were on patrol and discovered the thieves and ran to catch them but Liu pulled out a revolver and shot at them, injuring Xu in the head, before running off.

Zhou was caught at the scene by other civil defense patrolmen who ran to the scene when they heard the shooting. Liu and Shen were caught by police later. They were trying to steal more than 6,000 pairs of socks valued at 19,000 yuan (US$2,778).

The three had stolen scrap iron and iron blocks worth 3,600 yuan at another factory before that, police said.
