Some roads to future theme park completed
CONSTRUCTION of four artery roads connecting north and south Pudong has been finished, including one road to the main entrance of the future Disneyland, officials said yesterday.
After Nanhui's merger into Pudong in 2009, authorities decided to develop eight roads connecting the former Nanhui area with Pudong, complementing the original two. The planned new roads total 60 kilometers and cost about 9 billion yuan (US$1.4 billion).
About 82 percent of the projects have been finished and the remaining four roads will be open to traffic by the end of next year, after a delay.
"The demolition regulation issued last year and the change brought by the Disneyland project had suspended the road-construction projects," explained Jiang Aifeng, deputy director of the Pudong New Area Construction and Transportation Commission.
Under the new regulation issued by China's State Council, forced demolition can be carried out only after court approval if a dispute arises over expropriation or compensation between the government and a homeowner.
It takes more time to relocate residents to make land ready for development, compared with the past, Jiang said.
Moreover, the former planning for Shenjiang Road was modified after the city revealed the Disneyland project. That road's construction has been suspended to coordinate with an elevated road on Shenjiang Road and Disneyland metro line, Jiang said.
The road will lead to the Disneyland's western entrance, where about 70 percent of the theme park's visitors are expected to enter, Jiang said.
Construction on Tanghuang Road and Hangcheng Road, the eastern and southern border roads of the planned Disneyland, will be completed this April, Jiang said.
