Spacecraft engines donated to Qian Xuesen Library

China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation gave two spacecraft engines to Qian Xuesen Library and Museum at Shanghai Jiao Tong University on Sunday.

Library staff said both would go on display to the public as soon as possible.

Engines of the same models, a 490-Newton orbit-control engine and a 2,500-Newton binary engine, had been used to bring the Beidou satellite and Shenzhou crafts into space, corporation officials said.

The 2,500-Newton engine is China’s most powerful liquid-propellant rocket engine used for satellites and spacecraft. It powered 10 Shenzhou spacecraft into space.

The engines showcase the country’s aerospace achievements and pay tribute to the late Qian Xuesen, who is considered the father of China’s space program. Qian had proposed the development of a manned space industry and lunar exploration projects to the central government in 1958.
