Spring Festival quite peaceful this year

MORE than 20,000 police and firemen patrolled Shanghai streets during the Spring Festival from February 9 to 16. Thanks to their efforts, the city had a peaceful holiday, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said today.

Shanghai police strengthened their patrols in the city's major commercial areas, scenic spots, and transport hubs to prevent accidents and crimes.

Fire engines also plied Shanghai streets on the eve of the Chinese New Year and on February 13 when people set off tons of fireworks in a tradition to welcome the Fortune God.

Police helicopters circled over the city to watch for fire accidents during the holiday, the bureau said.

The police also conducted safety checks in hotels, restaurants and shopping centers to prevent fire hazards.

Shanghai traffic police cooperated with colleagues in neighboring Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces to monitor road condition of highways. As a result, more than 1.77 million auto vehicles entered or left Shanghai smoothly during the holiday. No traffic congestion was reported.
