Spring arrives, ending longest winter in 15 years

SHANGHAI has said goodbye to the longest winter in 15 years as weathermen declared that spring arrived last Friday.

Spring is announced when temperatures over five consecutive days average above 10 degrees Celsius, Xinmin.cn reported today.

It arrived earlier than normal, around March 25, but the 126-day winter is the longest in the past 15 years.

Rain fell on the city today, with the forecast between 6 and 12 degrees Celsius. It's due to stop tomorrow with another cold front late at night, forcing temperatures down by 8 degrees.

Friday morning will be chilly at 3 degrees, but temperatures are forecast to rise on Saturday to reach 14 over the weekend.
