Squabble over cab proves fatal

A YOUNG migrant worker who allegedly stabbed another to death in a scramble for a taxi has been arrested on a charge of manslaughter, Minhang District prosecutors said yesterday.

On the early morning of April 17, the victim Yu Cheng left a pub on Lianhua Road with two female friends, wanting to call a taxi home.

When a Qiangsheng taxi stopped in front of them, the suspect Lu Fang, who had just gone off duty from a hotel, rushed out suddenly and got in the taxi ahead of them.

Yu yelled at Lu, 21.

Another empty taxi arrived and one of Yu's girl friends urged him to take it, but Yu, being a little drunk, kept rapping the car window with his fist. At one point, he opened the door of the Qiangsheng taxi and grabbed Lu out to beat him. Yu's women companions were sure Yu, much stronger, could defeat Lu, prosecutors said.

But Yu was quickly bleeding all over and soon went unconscious. The taxi driver immediately ran him to the hospital, where he died of a massive hemorrhage from cuts in the chest and belly.

Police caught Lu that evening at home.

Lu told police he took the taxi because he was too tired and wanted to go back home quickly.

"I hadn't expected that man would follow me and beat me. We were just scrambling for a taxi," the suspect said allegedly. "If I didn't stab him with the knife, I might have been beaten to death."
