Standards raised for elevators
THE local quality watchdog said it is revising regulations on elevator safety with improvements in video surveillance equipment, elevator maintenance and insurance.
The Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau released a list of 20 elevator companies that have had irregularities such as workers failing to obtain certificates and unfamiliar with regulations.
The bureau this month also found 527 "scissors-style" escalators - with one going up and another down next to each other - that failed to have a fixed guard where they intersect. All deficiencies have been rectified, it said.
A new safety standard requires escalator operators to install a fixed baffle to keep riders from having their heads or extremities injured.
