Storm grounds hundreds of flights at city鈥檚 airports, top-level alert issued
SHANGHAI Airport Authority issued the top level red alert for severe flight delays around 2:45pm that means the takeoff and landing capacity was cut by 70 percent at Hongqiao and Pudong airports.
More than 250 flights were canceled and another 200 were delayed today at Shanghai’s two airports due to a severe rainstorm.
Pudong International Airport issued a massive flight delay alert at 1:20pm because of the rain affecting Shanghai and surrounding areas. The airport authority asked airlines to cooperate and stranded passengers to be patient.
Some 90 flights were canceled and another 109 delayed at Pudong airport by this afternoon.
Hongqiao airport had canceled 172 flights and delayed 117, according to the airport authority.
China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines had canceled 113 outbound and inbound flights with more to be affected.
China Eastern suspended check in services around 11am at Hongqiao airport due to flight delays, but resumed them this afternoon.
Spring Airlines said delays and cancelations would likely continue throughout the afternoon.
