Student dies in boating accident
A 23-YEAR-OLD Shanghai tourist has been killed in a boating accident in neighboring Zhejiang Province.
The victim, a female student at a Shanghai university, was on a seven-seat yacht on Qiandao Lake in Chun'an County with her dorm mate and five other tourists when another boat collided with it at 10:45am on Thursday, the Shanghai Evening Post reported yesterday. The boat, operated by the same company, hit them on the right side.
"Water flooded in and the roof was completely destroyed," said a tourist from Zhejiang's Wenzhou City.
The Wenzhou man, identified as Chen, said he was sitting beside the driver when the accident happened.
Chen, who was uninjured, saw the victim, surnamed Ye, pass out after the accident.
Her fellow student, Lin, had a slight cut to her head.
Both women were sitting behind the driver.
They had set off from the wharf at 10:30am and the accident happened just as the driver turned round to introduce himself to his passengers.
The other boat was reported to have 10 tourists onboard.
Other boats in the area helped pick up people from the two yachts, and 14 injured people were taken to Chun'an No. 1 People's Hospital. A woman from Anhui Province is reportedly being treated for life-threatening injuries.
Both Lin and Ye's parents have arrived at the hospital and have met local authorities.
Lin was suffering from shock and in need of psychological treatment, according to the report.
Qian Yong, Chun'an's deputy shipping administrator, told the newspaper that minor collisions between boats had occurred in the past but this was the first time there had been a fatality.
Boating is a popular pastime in the area and nearly 30 companies are in business on the lake, the newspaper said.
Lin and Xia arrived at Qiandao Lake, or "lake of thousand islands," on Thursday morning for the three-day Dragon Boat Festival.
