Students for hire
SOME ticket scalpers at the World Expo are now hiring high school or university students to line up for reservation tickets to popular pavilions and then selling them to visitors.
Some students are even using popular online trading platforms, such as Taobao.com, to offer their services. They sell reservation tickets for 100 yuan (US$ 14.6) to 600 yuan per ticket, depending on the popularity of the pavilion.
A ticket scalper, surnamed Gao, charged 600 yuan to take visitors to the Saudi Arabia Pavilion via the VIP channel. He offered the service on the online trading platform, Sh58.com.
He told Shanghai Daily that he worked at home contacting customers while he hired students to wait at the Expo site to lead visitors to the pavilion.
Gao said he paid a student 100 yuan for each deal and he could do about 10 deals every day.
"The students are lining up for the job to make some fast money," said Gao. He said he keeps the remaining 500 yuan because he finds customers, bargains with them and finalizes the deal.
He said he knows some employees at the Saudi Arabia Pavilion, which allows him access to its VIP entrance.
Another person selling reservation tickets on an online trading platform has secured the services of 20 university students selected from the school's track team, according to local newspaper Laodong Daily.
The newspaper said people had to book the students three days in advance since business was booming.
A security guard said the business was illegal but it was hard to stop because it's difficult to pick out the students and scalpers among the crowds of people.
