Subsidies, other perks lure overseas talents to Hongqiao zone

A simpler visa process and subsidies will be offered by the Shanghai Hongqiao Business Zone to attract more overseas talents to one of the city’s emerging business areas.

Foreign talents working for companies based in the zone near the Hongqiao airport and railway station can receive visas and employment certifications from a service center for the zone. Officials from the entry-exit, and other government bureaus have offices in the center.

“The Minhang District government will provide all kinds of conveniences on apartment renting and purchases, children’s education and medical care for foreign talents,” said Zhao Qi, the district’s Party chief.

Some 80,000 foreign residents live in or near the zone, including the city’s biggest Japanese and South Korean communities, Zhao said.

The high-end talents from abroad can receive a minimum 1,500-yuan (US$242) monthly housing subsidy from both the district government and their company. Overseas Chinese who have studied abroad and return to China are also eligible for the subsidy.
