Suicide averted

A man who contemplated suicide by jumping from the Waibaidu Bridge over Suzhou Creek at the Bund was saved by rescue workers yesterday morning. The old man climbed to the top of the truss bridge about 8am, witnesses said. Rescuers cordoned off two of the three lanes on the bridge during the morning rush hour, causing horrendous traffic congestion in the area. While negotiators were talking to the man, two rescuers approached him from behind and took him under control.
