Suicide jump from historical bridge foiled
A man threatened suicide jump from the Waibaidu Bridge at the Bund this morning, throwing rush-hour traffic into chaos. Police got him from the top of the camelback truss bridge and took him away at 7:45am.
The middle-aged man was seen tossing leaflets from the top of the bridge over the Suzhou Creek and overlooking the Bund. Witnesses said the leaflets described his frustration in a medical dispute with a hospital.
Police later said the man came from Fujian Province but did not disclose his suicide motive. After the distraught man was led away, traffic in the area returned to normal around 8am.
The century-old Waibaidu Bridge was originally called the Garden Bridge. It is an icon of Shanghai and is frequently used as a film setting. But the bridge also draws people who want to end their own lives. The latest suicide attempt happened on March 6 when a woman tried to jump into the river but was saved by two passers-by.
