Suicide man saved from Waibaidu Bridge this morning
A man who attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the top of the Waibaidu Bridge over the Suzhou Creek near the Bund was saved by rescue workers this morning.
The man who appeared advanced in age climbed to the top of the truss bridge around 8am and was sitting on it facing the Huangpu River, witnesses said.
Rescuers cordoned off two of the three lanes on the bridge during the morning rush hour, causing horrendous traffic congestion in the area.
Firefighters inflated a large air cushion underneath the man while police negotiators talked to him from a scaling ladder on a fire truck, witnesses said.
At about 9:10am, while the negotiators were still talking, two rescuers approached the man from behind and took him under control. He was brought down the bridge.
Many commuters were late for work due to traffic congestion caused by the incident.
