Suitcase safe thieves caught
THREE men were detained for allegedly stealing a safe in a suitcase from a famous snack restaurant in Putuo District on May 7, police said yesterday.
The suspects planned to open the safe in the restaurant, Yang's Fried Buns, when they broke in at 9pm but when they found they could not open the safe they went next door to a supermarket to buy a suitcase in which to carry out the safe, police said. The suspects, who were spotted on a surveillance camera, were caught on May 21, police said. One of them was a worker at the restaurant. They spent most of the 36,328 yuan (US$5,322) from the safe on gambling, police said.
