'Super rice' China's centerpiece exhibit at Milan World Expo
China's hybrid "super rice" will be the centerpiece exhibit in the China Pavilion at the World Expo 2015 Milan that has a theme about agriculture and food, officials said today.
The China Pavilion will be the second largest at the Expo Milan to cover some 4,500 square meters, following the 4,900-square-meter Germany Pavilion, said Wang Jinzhen, vice president of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.
With the theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life," Expo 2015 will mainly present measures to ensure food quality and security as well as high-quality nutrition.
The theme about food is both a challenge and opportunity to China, Wang said.
Some 30 million visitors are expected to visit the Expo Milan, some 30 percent of that of the Expo Shanghai.
The "super rice" is one of the most productive in the world developed by Chinese scientist Yuan Longping with an average output capacity of 800 kilograms per hectare, nearly double that of ordinary hybrid rice.
China confirmed its participation in World Expo Milan in 2010 - the first country to do so.
The Expo Milan site will cover 1.7 square kilometers compared to Shanghai's 5.28 square kilometers.
Meanwhile, a retrospective exhibition about the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea opened free to the public today at the former Puxi World Expo Shanghai site.
The exhibition to be held at the Expo Memorial Exhibition through August 31 showcases the theme, major pavilions, especially the China Pavilion and star-attraction exhibits at the Expo Yeosu.
