Supernatural scam gang held
POLICE have taken for questioning a gang who claimed to have supernatural powers to swindle cash from elderly people.
Officers said yesterday they have seized five people who they say scammed money and jewelry worth 400,000 yuan (US$62,120).
Police were alerted in early April by an elderly woman.
A man had struck up a conversation with her in the street and told her about a highly regarded "doctor," said Putuo District police.
The woman met with the so-called healer who warned her that misfortune was set to befall her soon, but assured her his "magic" skills could protect her.
Believing this, the woman brought more than 60,000 yuan in cash, as well as jewelry, including necklaces and rings, to the "doctor," said police.
However he and his retinue disappeared soon after receiving the haul.
Police found that several other similar cases have been reported since March.
One suspect would play the doctor role and the others would help trick victims.
The suspects were apprehended at the end of April in their hometown in southwest China's Sichuan Province, policemen said.
