Suspected car thieves under arrest
THREE members of a gang that allegedly broke into more than 100 cars to steal property have been arrested, Qingpu District police said today.
Police said the case is under further investigation because several victims haven't reported their losses to the police.
The gang broke into cars across several districts since June, police alleged, taking just three seconds to open a locked car and steal goods inside.
According to the police, the gang used cars as illegal taxis during the day and drove them at night to find cars parked in large shopping centers.
Police said a surveillance video tape showed that one man would break into a car while another kept watch.
One victim lost two laptops, a pair of expensive sunglasses and other goods worth nearly 30,000 yuan (US$4,392) while he was parked in an outlet shopping center in Qingpu District, police said.
