Suzhou skills on display at T2 terminal
An exhibition center featuring heritage skills from Suzhou in neighboring Jiangsu Province was launched at Pudong International Airport yesterday.
The Suzhou Artisanship Experiencing Center at the ticket hall of the T2 terminal is displaying 100 artworks of nut sculpture, Su embroidery and stone carving along with bilingual introductions and videos.
About 10 heritage masters from Suzhou, including Yao Jianping, a renowned Su embroidery master, showcased their skills on site and shared their knowledge with travelers, over 5,000 of whom visited the center on its first day.
“The basic purpose to develop the heritage skills center is to combine traditional artisanship with people’s daily lives,” said Yao.
Another Su embroidery master Fu Hanlu said the Pudong airport not only helps to showcase the embroidery but also aids in exchanges with other cultures and civilizations. Fu, who inherited the skill from her mother, is famous for combining the traditional embroidery with French culture.
The center is the latest of the airport authority’s efforts to promote Chinese culture among travelers. The airport has China’s first airport museum, art gallery and other art and culture exhibitions in its terminal buildings.
