Swindler even cheated his wife
A MAN who is said to have swindled more than 1 million yuan (US$147,284) from a number of middle-aged women, even cheating one who became his wife, has been arrested, Jing'an District Prosecutors' Office said yesterday.
Zhu Fugui, 44, is said to have pretended to be a civil servant of the national security bureau and the cousin of Chinese actor Sun Honglei to win the trust of his victims. He then asked to borrow money from them using various excuses.
After finding out about the swindles, his wife tried to commit suicide but was found in time by her sister.
Zhu met his wife, Ma Tian, 44, through friends last August. Though unemployed, Zhu told Ma that he was a boss and had an investment project worth about 6 million yuan in Jiading District.
He borrowed money from Ma from time to time for business needs.
They tied the knot last September.
However, after that Zhu was seldom at home. Ma gradually found out that her husband had been cheating on her with other women.
She tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills but was found by her sister and taken to hospital.
One of the victims, Ding Xiaoyun, lent Zhu 1.15 million yuan.
Ding, 41, met Zhu through online chats in 2006 and they became lovers. Zhu first told Ding he was a company engineer but after a while said that was just a cover for his real identity as a civil servant with the national security bureau.
He showed Ding a fake public servant certificate, handcuffs, baton and a car installed with a siren and a walkie-talkie to make her believe his lies.
He also told Ding his father was an engineer, his mother a doctor and his sister married to an Italian and living in Africa. His uncles were army doctors and his cousin the famous Chinese actor Sun Honglei.
After becoming her boyfriend, Zhu borrowed money from her many times. He once borrowed 300,000 yuan by saying his mother was sick in hospital while all his money was tied up in investments.
He even borrowed 450,000 yuan from her with the excuse that a colleague was injured and needed money for treatment.
Ding obeyed all his wishes but the frequent borrowing made her suspicious and she eventually called police at the end of 2007.
She managed to reclaim 450,000 yuan through lawsuits but still lost 700,000 yuan because Zhu had no more money.
During their investigation police found several other women taken in by his fake identity as a public servant.
