Tanker drivers detained for illegally dumping cement
FIVE tank car drivers have been detained and their cars seized for illegally dumping hundreds of tons of cement into a key ecologically vulnerable area in southern Shanghai on early Tuesday morning, urban management authorities said on Wednesday.
As a result, the former Wenrong Animal Farm, which has recently been cleared of illegal constructions to be turned into a farming land, suffered “immeasurable devastation,” according to the authorities in Songjiang District.
The suspects were caught red-handed after reports came from the public about the offense, but the sixth driver managed to flee the scene and is still being hunted.
All of the six tank cars were dumping the cement with three finishing by the time the urban management members arrived, the authorities said.
The cement was dumped to the bank of a river and ruined a good part of the greenery.
The former animal farm, located on Xinkai Road in Xinqiao Town, stretches about 79,000 square meters and was once notorious for hosting about 20 illegal factories including some heavy polluters.
An official from the Xinqiao urban management team told Shanghai Daily that the spot was not fenced so that anyone could enter.
