Taxi Parts Stolen, Three Detained
THREE people have been detained for stealing rooftop lights, meters, GPS terminals, operation licenses and invoice rolls from taxis and selling them to illegal cab operators, police said yesterday.
The gang is responsible for 40 thefts and is suspected in another 30 cases, police said.
One of the suspects is a mechanic and can remove these items from cabs quickly. The gang even provided a service to install rooftop lights and GPS systems for illegal cabs, police said.
The thefts started two months ago in Jinqiao of the Pudong New Area, police said. The three usually drove a car into complexes and stole one by one, police said.
With the stolen items, illegal cabs look the same as real taxis, causing serious harm to the market, police said.
