Taxi driver is detained for robbing passenger
A LOCAL taxi driver has been detained for allegedly robbing an 86-year-old man of more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,500), city police said yesterday.
The driver, Liu Wei, was caught five days after the robbery and the money returned to the victim, surnamed Shen, police said.
Shen went to a bank alone to withdraw 10,100 yuan about 10am on October 22 in Putuo District, from where he took a yellow taxi home.
However, as he returned home and was about to open his door, a middle-aged man rushed ahead and grabbed the money, which was inside a blue paper box. Shen called the police at noon.
Officers reviewed all the surveillance cameras along the route from the bank to Shen's home.
They saw that the taxi Shen took did not drive off after he left the cab -- instead the driver stepped out the car and watched Shen walking off. Liu then got back into the cab and followed Shen to his home.
Unable to recognize the taxi's license plate number, officers contacted the taxi company according to the cab's color.
The company, one of the top five taxi firms in the city, cooperated with the police, helping to search all the possible taxis in the area that day using a GPS system.
Liu was apprehended on October 27 and the money was found in his residence, police said.
Liu told police he learned that Shen had taken money from a bank while talking to him during the cab ride.
Police warned people to be cautious when withdrawing money at all times.
