Teen gang held over 86 scooter thefts, car break ins

A GANG of teenagers has been held by police in connection with almost 90 scooter thefts and car break-ins in Baoshan District.

The eight suspects, aged between 14 and 17, are said to planned thefts over the Internet, according to police.

They are suspected of being involved in 86 cases of theft of items worth more than 500,000 yuan (US$80,000) this year in Yuepu Town.

Police said the gang targeted stealing scooters and mopeds and breaking into car and taking property.

They were held on February 2.

According to police, the teenagers said they met on an online game community and planned their “missions” over the Internet.

Some had committed similar offenses before but were too young to be held responsible, said officers.

Under Chinese criminal law, under 16s cannot be held responsible for theft.
