Thief gets 12 years in hotel room robberies
THE thief who stole more than 230,000 yuan (US$36,208) from 14 star-rated hotels in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou was sentenced to 12 years and three months in prison, the Jing'an District People's Court ruled yesterday.
The convict, Chen Youzhong, was also fined 120,000 yuan by the court.
Prosecutors said Chen pretend to make a phone call by the entrance to a hotel's morning buffet while actually overhearing guests revealing their room numbers.
He then went to their rooms and asked cleaners to open the doors. He used this trick to steal cash and valuables worth more than 236,500 yuan, the court heard.
Chen was caught in the lobby of Shanghai JC Mandarin Hotel in November.
He told the court that he had spent all the stolen money on travel and gambling.
