Thief loses appeal of his 13-year sentence
A 13-year jail sentence handed down to a man who snatched gold from a jewelry outlet in the Yuyuan Garden tourist area was upheld on appeal yesterday by the Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court.
The unemployed man, She Jingba, 33, had spent three and a half years in prison before. He stole gold jewelry worth more than 49,000 yuan (US$7,634) from the Yuyuan store on January 1, seven months after he was released from prison. After trying on a golden necklace and bracelet, he suddenly ran off. A security guard grabbed his collar but he escaped.
She said he sold the gold for 30,000 yuan and spent the cash on himself and paying gambling debts. He was arrested January 7 at his residence by city police who had identified his fingerprints.
