Thief uses rock-climbing gear to raid warehouse

A MAN has been detained for alledgedly stealing 72 iPhone 4 handsets from a warehouse, local police said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Lu, had worked in the warehouse in Jiading District and knew the layout, police said.

"He's a pro," said officer Wang Jun, adding that the suspect used professional rock-climbing equipment while committing the crime.

The stolen goods are worth nearly 400,000 yuan (US$60,000), police said.

Police said Lu first climbed a 2-meter-high wall before lifting himself onto the rooftop of the warehouse early last Friday.

Using a knife, he cut out a hole in part of the glass sheeting on the roof.

He then lowered himself into the warehouse using a rope, police said. Lu is also said to have got out of the building by using the rope to get down from the roof.

Lu abandoned the equipment in a river near the warehouse and fled across the river, police said. The suspect was caught within 24 hours.

Lu told police that he learned how to climb so expertly "from television."
