Thieves caught after string of robberies
POLICE in Pudong New Area are reminding residents to lock their windows when sleeping or not at home to help prevent burglaries after they nabbed two people suspected of stealing cash, jewelry, watches and electronic goods worth about 1.5 million yuan (US$220,000).
Police caught the suspects before they had offloaded the goods and returned 700,000 yuan worth of property to the owners yesterday morning.
The two suspects, both from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, committed 20 thefts in Pudong, Xuhui, Hongkou and Minhang in the past month, police said.
They targeted households on lower floors - from the ground to third floors - in high-rise residential buildings and broke in through open windows at night or when owners weren't at home. Bian Changzhong, deputy director of the Pudong police, said they viewed thousands of surveillance videos from residential areas, schools and banks nearby to identify the suspects.
"The suspects deleted all the information on digital products, such as laptops, cameras and cell phones," Bian said.
To find the victims, police technicians spent a week recovering deleted information from laptops and other stolen electronic goods.
