Thieves see typhoon as opportunity
AS the city was busy fighting the typhoon, some people decided to take advantage of the situation.
Police yesterday reported some theft cases in the city when the typhoon hit Shanghai on Wednesday.
The thieves were watching as stores closed early, police said.
A man, surnamed Lu, was caught, suspected of stealing jeans and a pair of sneakers worth 5,000 yuan (US$786), from a shop in downtown Xuhui District on Wednesday, local police said.
He was seized by officers on patrol the moment he stepped outside the shop.
To the officers' amusement, he asked them, "Aren't you people patrolling on the streets for the emergency response to the typhoon?"
In another case, a gang of thieves from neighboring Kunshan City were caught casing a Line 7 Station late Wednesday as the wind blew and torrential rain fell, police said.
