Thousand of fish die in Shanghai river

THOUSANDS of fish suddenly died in a Shanghai river yesterday.

The fish were found over a 1,500-meter stretch of the 25-meter wide river in Sanlin Township, Pudong New Area.
About 10,000 dead fish floated all the way down to the Sanlin Port, according to Xinmin Evening News today.

The dead fish have started to decay and stink.

A lady surnamed Han living beside the river told the newspaper that lots of fish start to wash up about 4pm on Saturday.

Five minutes later the river was covered in dead fish, Han told the paper.

More than 100 residents started picking up the fish to eat but got scared when so many fish appeared dead, according to the report.

The fish may have died from a lack of oxygen. The low air pressure and a new pump station built recently in the upper stream of the river might have lowered the oxygen level in the river, the district environmental protection authority said.

The authority said it could not confirm that until the result of tests.
