Toddler drowns in septic tank
A TODDLER drowned in a septic tank less than 100 meters from her home in Baoshan District.
Ren Lu, who was not yet five, went missing on Friday. Her parents and neighbors had searched desperately throughout their residential complex for two days, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
Ren's aunt remembers seeing the child playing in the complex on Friday morning but she did not return home.
After an hour or so Ren's mother became concerned and she and family members searched her along the nearby river and railway tracks where children often played.
Police arrived and expanded the search, asking the public to look out for the girl.
A worker from a hair salon eventually told police that the cover of the septic tank had been removed for some time on Friday.
Police opened the tank and found the little girl's body
Her parents fainted on hearing the news.
Neighbors said Ren was a delightful girl who smiled constantly. She was staying at home for the summer holidays. The family had moved in a year ago and were good neighbors, the report said.
Some residents told the newspaper that sanitary workers never forgot to close the lid on the septic tank after working. However some people in the complex took dung from the tank to fertilize vegetables.
While they collected dung the tank stayed open and there were no warning signs or safety barriers.
Neighbors thought that Ren whom was less than a meter tall, had sunk to the bottom of the tank before she could shout for help. The neighborhood committee refused to comment. Police are investigating.
