Toll discounts for drivers with e-tags

DRIVERS who use electronic tags to pay tolls will be given a discount when buying the equipment after the city offered toll discounts to users in May.

Details of the discounts are still under discussion, said Shen Xiaosu, deputy director of Shanghai's Transport Commission, today.

According to a draft plan targeting would-be users, new users who deposit 1,000 yuan on an electronic toll collection (ETC) card will enjoy a 200-yuan discount when buying the On-Board Unit (OBU), which normally sells for 430 yuan.

The OBU is attached to the vehicle to communicate with the electronic readers installed at the toll station.

Since last month, ETC users enjoy a three-year 5 percent discount when paying the tolls at city stations.

About 72,000 local users have been equipped with the ETC tags and cards so far, officials said. Up to 45,000 of them use the e-toll system everyday.
