Top shipyard to launch pavilion

A FAMOUS shipyard is to build a pavilion on the Huangpu River to provide an insight into future waterside life at the next year's Expo.

The China State Shipbuilding Corporation, owner of the more than 140-year-old Jiangnan Shipyard, signed a contract with the Expo organizer yesterday to build a corporate pavilion for Expo and unveiled its design.

A former welding workshop will form the basis of the 5,000-square-meter pavilion to be built on the shipyard's original site. It has since moved to Changxing Island.

The corporation's exhibition theme will be "Ships make life better" and it will show visitors how ships can have an important influence on future urban life, said Nie Chenggen, director of the pavilion.

Meanwhile, Expo Shanghai Online is to have an official Website, www.expo.cn, the Expo organizer told the 2nd International Symposium on Expo Online in Paris.

It will be a virtual counterpart to the real Expo.

Visitors can "walk around" the 3D site and interact by playing games, chat with pavilion chiefs and even plan a city of the future.
