Tot falls 9 floors to her death as family moves into apartment
A baby girl fell from a high-rise apartment building and died late Sunday night as her family was busy moving into their new home.
It was unclear how the two-year-old girl got into position to fall from her ninth-floor apartment in a residential area of Baoshan District but neighbors said the family was preoccupied with the move and neglected to watch her.
The tragedy happened about 10pm Sunday at Lane 655 Chengyin Road. The girl, not identified, fell to the handicap ramp at Building 13, site of her new home, and was dead at the scene.
"Her mother then rushed down, crying, and couldn't believe what just happened," a witness in the neighborhood said yesterday. "The kid's father came downstairs later and was so shocked that he didn't even know how to call the police."
Residents said the family had just moved into their apartment that day and every one of them was busy.
"They should've looked after the kid since they live in a high-rise and she was so little," a neighbor said. "If such tragedy happened to my grandson it wouldn't be easy for me to accept, either."
The scene was cleared about 1am yesterday.
Police are investigating the case.
