Traditional arts auction a big hit
A ROSEWOOD sculpture depicting Bodhidharma, a famous Buddhist monk who was called Damo in China, was auctioned for 2.6 million yuan (US$407,940) and three inkpads were sold for 100,000 yuan yesterday at Shanghai's first auction of artworks of the city's intangible cultural heritage that officials said went far beyond expectations.
A total of 114 works, all from master craftsmen of artwork, were auctioned to help promote endangered local skills.
"About 200 bidders took part in the auction while more than 90 percent of the artworks were sold, which was far better than our expectations," said Gao Chunming, deputy director of the city's intangible cultural heritage protection center.
