Traffic congestion heavier than usual as tunnel closed for renovations

The morning rush hours didn’t generate the expected gridlock on the first workday since half of the Yan'an Road Tunnel, connecting the Bund area and Lujiazui, was closed for renovations on Saturday.

But traffic police said they feared the afternoon rush hour would see more congestion.

Traffic was heavier than usual this morning at Nanpu Bridge and several stops on Metro Line 2 had a significant increase in commuters, according to local media reports.

Cars on nearby streets were backed up about 500 meters waiting to enter the Pudong entrance of the Renmin Road Tunnel this morning. Extra traffic police were on duty in the area to direct traffic, a Shanghai Daily reporter found.

The east-to-west section of the Yan'an Road Tunnel, one of the city's most used passages under the Huangpu River, has been closed for renovations until January 2016.
