Truck accidents kill 2, injure 1
TWO people were killed and one other was injured in truck-related accidents yesterday in Shanghai, the latest victims of heavy vehicles.
Public concern continued to rise even though 28 local truck companies and more than 4,000 drivers promised on Friday to "control and reduce accidents caused by construction vehicles."
In yesterday's accidents, a woman in her 30s was crushed beneath a Pudong New Acontainer truck at the intersection of Zhonggao Highway and Pudong Road N. in rea about 11am.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
A 62-year-old man, surnamed Cai, died after being hit by a truck at the intersection of Hongmei Road S. and Beiwu Road in Minhang District about 11:30am.
Cai was riding a bicycle when he was hit, a witness said.
A woman on a bicycle had her left leg broken when she was hit by a cement truck about 8am near a highway in Qingpu District, Xinmin Evening News reported.
Police are investigating all three accidents.
To date, heavy construction vehicles have now been linked to 24 deaths since November 17.
Traffic police, urban management authorities and four other city government departments launched two major crackdowns - one on speeding, the other on overloaded trucks - earlier this month as construction work picked up ahead of World Expo 2010 Shanghai.
Overloading among construction vehicles is "very common," police said.
Some truck companies were even found to have encouraged drivers to carry more to earn more.
