Truck crushes bridge; unknowing motorcyclist plunges to death
A motorcyclist died after falling into a river with his head hitting on a cargo truck that fell into the same river 15 minutes earlier when the bridge collapsed under its weight.
According to nearby residents, the accident occurred on 4:30am on Zhaolou Road, Minhang District, when the concrete bridge suddenly gave way under the weight of a passing truck loaded with asphalt.
The truck fell into the river but the driver managed to swim ashore.
Instead of reporting to police, the unidentified driver fled the scene and remains still missing.
About 15 minutes later, a male motorcyclist sped up toward the bridge in dim light, but it was too late for him to find the bridge was already gone. He fell into the river, bumping his head on the truck. He died on the spot.
A witness said he recovered the motorcyclist's body several hours after the accident.
He said the concrete bridge had been used for many years and was in need of repair and maintenance.
Minhang District police said they were not aware of the accident and Pujiang Town was responsible for the collapse of the old bridge.
A town official, surnamed Wang, told Shanghai Daily that they were still investigating the case.
