Tunnel dug through for 17th river underpass

The Jiangpu Road Tunnel was successfully dug through on Monday, according to its contractor Chengtou Group.

The 2.28-kilometer tunnel is the 17th beneath the Huangpu River, which stretches from Jiangpu Road, Longjiang Road of Yangpu District to Minsheng Road, Shangcheng Road of the Pudong New Area.

It is expected to be completed next year and strengthen the cross-river integration and benefit the development of the Yangpu Waterfront.

The project has overcome the complex geology across the Huangpu River section, penetrating the Pudong and Puxi flood walls and other key structures.

Meanwhile, it crosses the remaining pile foundation areas such as Laomatou (old dock area), and overlaps with the under-construction Metro Line 18.

The tunnel is composed of the east section and west section, the latter dug through first earlier this year.

In the next step, construction will focus on the internal connecting passage and the mid-tunnel section.
