Tunnel will link Expo sites
SHANGHAI'S only tunnel linking both sites of the World Expo across the Huangpu River will open on April 20, the builder said today.
Xizang Road S. Tunnel, located between Lupu Bridge and Nanpu Bridge, will have three ramps leading inside the Expo site.
It takes four minutes to travel between the two sides at a designed speed of 40 kilometers an hour, said Tian Jin, an engineer of the tunnel project with Shanghai No.2 Municipal Engineering Co Ltd.
Only vehicles authorized to enter Expo zones will be allowed to use the tunnel during the fair, traffic authorities said.
About 60,000 to 70,000 visitors are expected to go through the tunnel per hour.
The tunnel will open to the public after the Expo ends in October.
The newly built tunnel, 2.67 kilometers long, began construction in November 2005.
