Two become one: Line 16 to connect trains as remedy for its unexpected design fail

The Metro operator began using six-carriage trains for Line 16 in a test operation from today after commuters complained they had to queue up for long time before entering stations.

The train under testing during rush hours on workdays is connected by two three-carriage trains. They will operate along with the normal three-carriage trains, the operator Shentong said. The date to officially launch the six-carriage trains has yet to be decided.

Line 16 extended its route from Luoshan Road Station to Longyang Road Station at the end of 2014. Trains for Longyang Road Station, the interchange station for Line 2 and 7, have been fully packed during morning rush hours. The condition became worse with the three-carriage trains.

The Metro operator has been restricting commuters’ movements by shutting down some turnstiles and restricting access to the stations during the office hours.

However, the waiting time at Heshahangcheng and Zhoupudong stations on Line 16 can be as much as 40 to 50 minutes during morning rush hours because of crowd control. The queue can be almost 2 kilometers long.

The operator said the line was initially designed for sightseeing, so they failed to expect so many commuters and used three-carriage trains into service.
