Two held for a fatal hit and run
A SHANGHAI woman surnamed Guo and her driver, surnamed Zhou, have been taken into custody for an alleged hit-and-run accident that killed a scooter driver in Baoshan District 10 days ago, district police said yesterday.
The crash took place about 7:20pm on April 17 on Changlin Road near Gongkang Road. The victim was a local man, whose name has not been released. He was in his 50s, police said.
The scooter rider was traveling north along Changlin Road. His scooter was bumped by the rear door of Guo's vehicle, when she opened it. Guo's car was parked in a bike lane, violating traffic regulations. Police said the 27-year-old Guo opened the door without looking.
The scooter driver fell into the road and was run over by another car. Jiang, the driver of the other car, said he tried to stop but wasn't able to, according to traffic police.
The scooter driver died at the scene, traffic police said.
Guo and Zhou fled from the scene along with Guo's husband and daughter, who were also in the car, police said. Video footage showed Guo got out of the car with Zhou and her husband and joined the crowd after the scooter driver was run over. The three of them returned to their car about five minutes later and drove away.
Tracing the car's plate number, police officers caught Guo and Zhou three days later at Guo's home in Fengxian District. Guo said they parked the car on the bike lane as her 6-year-old daughter wanted to eat at a nearby KFC.
Police said Zhou and Guo were detained for vehicular manslaughter and fleeing the scene of an accident.
Two others were killed on Shanghai's roads yesterday when a migrant woman and her seven-year-old daughter were knocked down by a cement truck at the crossing of Minhang's Huajiang Road and Shahe Bridge. Mother and daughter died at the scene.
