Two nabbed after suspected of robbing cab drivers with knife

LOST in the city without money after being cheated by an illegal job agency, two young men robbed taxi drivers but were soon caught, city police said yesterday.

Baoshan District police said the men got 600 yuan (US$95) at knife point from two drivers and injured one of them. One suspect, surnamed Zeng, 22, is from Henan Province and the other, surnamed Yang, 19, is from Sichuan Province, police said.

The duo met in a local entertainment venue where Zeng worked after the Spring Festival. Lured by an illegal agency with the promise of a high salary, Zeng did not get paid. He was cheated out of more than 10,000 yuan, and the two young men had spent all their money, police said.

"Failing to get other jobs, the two decided to rob taxi drivers and return to their hometowns," said officers.

The two suspects first took an illegal cab near Baoshan's Metro Line 3, robbing the driver of 300 yuan and a bank card as they arrived in Minhang District late on February 21. Yang went to check the bank card after they threatened the driver at knife point into revealing the password. Early the next morning they threatened another driver with a knife. The suspects slashed the driver on the hand and took 300 yuan from him, police said, before they fled.

The police traced the suspects to a local motel where they were caught hours later while sleeping.
