UK Pavilion seeds sold in a wink through online auction
A total of 8,000 seeds contained in transparent acrylic rods embedded in the UK Pavilion were snapped up by Netizens in two minutes after their auction started this morning on Taobao.com.cn.
Each seed is priced at 199 yuan (US$29.76), and the British pavilion will donate the proceeds from the auction to CereCare Wellness Center Shanghai, a charity organization focusing on the recovery and treatment of children with cerebral palsy.
The seeds will be delivered to each buyer after the Expo when the acrylic rods are removed, along with a collection certificate and a stamp from the UK Pavilion.
Those who failed to get a seed today can wait for the next auction or choose limited-edition seeds which will be available for auction later, with the proceeds also donated to the CereCare.
During an earlier charity auction, one of the pavilion's 60,680 acrylic rods was sold for 20,000 yuan. The pavilion will also donate 1,000 rods to Chinese schools, according to the pavilion officials.
Some rods will be preserved at the Expo Museum with pictures, models and plants from the pavilion to remember the "Seed Cathedral" at the Expo, where visitors learn to recognize seeds of different plants and marvel at the hollow structure bristling with transparent rods.
