USA starts to party

JUST two days before the July 4 Independence Day, the USA Pavilion celebrates its National Pavilion Day today with a show by the famous University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band.

The USC goodwill ambassador band is making its fifth appearance at a World Expo and its fourth visit to China in the past eight years.

The evening gala performance will be held in the Red Hall of the Expo Center at 8pm.

It will feature singer Harry Connick Jr, 2010 Miss USA, the USC Marching Band and many other performers.

The USA Pavilion's theme is "Rising to the Challenge" and tells the story of the American spirit of perseverance, innovation and community-building in a multi-dimensional, high-tech presentation.

The 6,000-square-meter gray steel structure is designed to resemble an eagle spreading its wings in welcome.

It features the 4-D show "The Garden" about a 10-year-old girl who works with neighbors to turn a vacant city lot into an urban oasis, in keeping with the Shanghai World Expo theme "Better City, Better Life."

The film "Spirit of America" is a call to collaboration and a celebration of freedom, diversity, innovation and opportunity.

The section "Opportunities and Innovation" highlights technology and innovation to achieve more sustainable communities.

One of the highlights is the daily "Dance America!" outdoor show, featuring American dance like the Charleston, swing, pop, rock 'n' roll, disco and tap, including everything from "Saturday Night Fever" to "Thriller."

The USA Pavilion is in Zone C, near the Brazil Pavilion and Columbia Pavilion.
