Umbrella fall boy copied phone game
A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy plummeted from a fifth floor balcony yesterday, holding an umbrella in imitation of a cell phone game.
As he fell, the boy's clothes caught on a second floor balcony, where he was found by neighbors.
The child was rushed to hospital following the drama at a residential complex in downtown Changning District.
Doctors found the boy was uninjured and he was allowed to go home.
An umbrella was found where the boy fell and his aunt said he had been playing a game called "Parachute Jump" on her cell phone earlier.
Shortly before 2am, residents in a second floor apartment heard noises at their balcony and on investigating found the boy.
"He was hanging there outside the window, holding on to bars," said the householder.
The boy was brought in and the neighbors tried to establish where he lived.
Security guards arrived at the scene, as the falling boy triggered an alarm system on the balcony barrier.
An umbrella was found lying on the ground.
The boy's aunt was looking after him that night as his mother was out of town, said a community staff member, surnamed Li.
His parents were divorced and the boy came to Shanghai for the holidays, said Li.
The boy's aunt said she left him sleeping and popped out for 20 minutes to buy food.
But when she returned, she found police at the scene.
This is not the first time the boy has done something like this, said neighbors.
Residents on the fourth floor said they once pulled him in to safety.
The boy's mother rushed back to Shanghai afterwards.
