Umbrellas, beverages on list of banned items

LONG-HANDLED umbrellas, bottled beverages and 20 other types of articles will not be allowed to be taken into the 2010 World Expo Site due to security concerns, Shanghai police said over the weekend.
Zhu Weiming, deputy director of Shanghai Public Security Bureau, said that Expo visitors would pass two security checks before entering the site and reminded visitors not to carry forbidden goods and cooperate with the checks.
Zhu said the first layer would be a random check arranged outside and around the Expo site. At this stage, visitors will be reminded not to bring forbidden items.
The second check will be at the Expo entrance gates and will feature "a strict search on all people and their belongings."
"All drinks, except for milk products for infants, will not be allowed into the Expo site," Zhu said.
Meanwhile, the security check should also apply to Metro Line 13, which goes directly to the Expo site. Zhu said the check will be set up at the Madang Road station and will be the same as those at Expo entrance gates.
"Getting on Line 13 means getting into the site so we will enforce the security check on this line," Zhu said.
Zhu also said guns, explosives, imitation guns, electric shock implements, bows and arrows, knives, petrol, alcohol, flammable items, clubs, long-handled umbrellas, needles and big-sized packs will be forbidden on the Expo site.
The World Expor starts on May 1 and ends on October 31. The event is expected to attract 70 million visitors.
