Unclosed door has caused woman's fatal elevator fall
The unclosed door of an elevator shaft caused a 21-year-old woman to plunge to her death yesterday, the Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision said this morning in a news conference.
The elevator maintenance worker illegally shortened the car's interlock circuit, causing the shaft door to stay open when the elevator was in motion, the experts said.
The woman was believed to have walked into the shaft unknowingly at the ground level of a building at 188 Huaihai Road M. because the shaft door was open and fell six meters into the pit. She died there.
Shanghai Mitsubishi Elevator Company provides the maintenance service and the elevator was still within the quality guarantee period until the next check on April 7.
Official investigation is continuing to find out why the woman stumbled into the lift shaft.
